Watercourse Way to Discovering Your Personal Art Journey with Barbara McEvoy

We ARE all artists---even those of you who "can’t even draw a straight line." The problem is, we are taught from an early age in a "linear" fashion. Even our language encourages methodical thinking, and methodical, linear thinking will not take us to the artistic part of our brain or our life. Call it abstract thinking, right brain orientation, creativity, spontaneity, accessing our sub-conscious, discovering our "real self, freeing our soul." What we call it doesn’t matter....this amorphous and elusive part of our being is where our fun, our play and our personal art can be found. We will do a variety of activities aimed at clearing the cobwebs from our right brain and moving us along our own personal art journey. For the first class wear comfortable clothes (we will do a few easy stretches), bring a notebook (8x10, lined or unlined) or a folder with loose leaf paper, dedicated to this class and something to write with. Also bring some form of colored writing implement to doodle with. Crayons, markers, colored pencils, or pastels are all fine. Although there is no textbook for the class, some exercises will be taken from the book, "The Artist’s Way," by Julia Cameron. It is recommended as a resource and supplement to this class. Copies will be for sale. Barbara McEvoy received MA from Villanova in Literature studies and her PhD from Stanford focusing on incorporating art and creativity into education through curriculum, methods and activities. Most of her first professional life (in education) was spent teaching literature and writing at all levels, but included time in research, in curriculum and administrative work and in college teaching. Believing in the mind body connections as well as multiple layers of consciousness and interpretation, Barbara also studied with a Jungian Analyst and is certified in both Ashtanga and Sivanando Yoga. Barbara’s present professional life is Artist, but because of all the people who have come into Group 8 Gallery and say that they "appreciate art but couldn’t possibly do anything artistic myself," she’s decided she must teach others how to "discover their own personal art," to share the fun they don’t yet know they are missing.
